It is very important to identify the problem of receding gums in the early stages. Teeth should always be brushed gently with a soft bristled toothbrush. grinding teeth, chewing tobacco and other harmful substances should be strictly discouraged. In case of plaque, good oral hygiene should be maintained. When the problem is severe and beyond just the hygiene issue, a good periodontist should be consulted who, depending on the severity might suggest ‘gum grafting’. In this technique the gums of adjacent teeth or the connective tissue from the roof of the mouth is taken and repositioned to cover the exposed part of the teeth. This procedure can be done with or without the use of local anaesthesia. Very recently a new technique involving the use of platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) infused bone graft material has been developed. It is combined along with cellular matrix and grafted. This promotes greater levels of osseointegration with the healthy tissue of the patient. It takes about 2-4 weeks to heal. Regular evaluation and minor repositioning is done as and when required.
As mentioned earlier gentle brushing and a good oral hygiene are the important pre-requisites. Regular flossing helps remove food and particle debris and helps prevent plaque formation. A good germicidal mouthwash should be used. Timely visits to the dentist is a must. And lastly vitamin c should be included in the daily diet apart from avoiding glucose-rich food.
